Witchspire offers the fantasy of becoming a powerful witch, then makes room for the equally seductive fantasy of having your house in order. Envar Games' survival adventure puts resource gathering, creature companions and Sanctuary building inside a magical open world. It is a pleasingly practical interpretation of sorcery. You can pursue mysterious powers, certainly, but somebody still needs to arrange the crafting stations. Even a coven eventually needs to decide where everything goes.

The Windows game entered Early Access on June 10, 2026. February's gradual playtest and Next Fest demo were earlier previews, not a finished release. This remains a developing adventure, with the substantial September and October updates already delivered rather than dangling ahead as hypothetical improvements.

Reasons to look closer

Magic reaches beyond combat. Gathering can involve conjured forests and enchanted pickaxes, while astral projection lets you move freely when building. Familiars assist with crafting, puzzles and fighting. Those connections give the premise substance: your powers belong to the daily routine, not just the moments when something wants to kill you. A floating construction supervisor is a better use of the supernatural than another mandatory ladder.

Your wand now has options

October 21's Dormant Powers update replaces predetermined weapon abilities with a more flexible arrangement. Spell Gems move between weapons, Sigils alter spells, and the enhancement table upgrades equipment. Healing, shields and summoned allies broaden the available roles. The interesting part is not simply collecting a stronger stick. It is keeping a preferred spell while changing the tool around it, giving attachment to a build somewhere to go besides the recycling bin.

Recycling now has its own station, too, alongside craftable Scrappy familiars and a command wheel for companion behaviour. However, old weapons cannot use the new enhancement table, and some existing items cannot be salvaged. Existing worlds remain playable; starting over is recommended, not mandatory. That is a meaningful distinction for anyone with an established home. The renovation notice is real, but nobody has officially condemned your kitchen. Returning players should expect to replace equipment rather than assume every old possession converts neatly. Defensive, aggressive and passive companion orders also make a familiar more than another autonomous distraction. Being able to tell a small magical associate to wait is an underrated form of power.

A respectable home for suspicious people

September's Haunted Magick update leans into the domestic side with an 82-piece Gothic building set, garden decorations, paintings and pumpkins. There are two additional familiars, Pumpaling and Enmire, plus vampiric clothing and older character faces. It is an unusually complete answer to the question of whether your witch can look like an experienced local menace. A sinister house deserves an owner who appears to have complained about the neighbouring coven for decades.

There is practical substance underneath the seasonal wardrobe. Inventory sorting and a level-cap increase to 45 accompanied the decorations, while dungeon entrances gained information about lore and threats. That pairing is encouraging: more things to collect should arrive with better ways to manage and understand them. Otherwise an expanding magical world risks becoming a cupboard full of objects nobody can explain. The Gothic set costs a Luminary point, so architectural ambition still has a place in progression.

Before everyone moves in

Solo play is available, and player-hosted online sessions support up to six people. The developer recommends four for most groups because hosting can be demanding, and the host must remain online for friends to enter that world. This is not an always-open communal home independent of its owner. Choose a host whose schedule suits the group, rather than the friend most likely to announce a sudden month-long holiday after everyone has unpacked.

World settings include four difficulty presets. Impossible makes familiar deaths permanent and drops all your items when you die, a fairly pointed warning that the charming premise is not a universal promise of comfort. Agree on the rules before anyone bonds with a creature. The attraction is being able to shape the kind of adventure your group wants, not discovering halfway through that one person selected a magical holiday and another selected an insurance claim. Adjustable settings are especially valuable when your group contains both enthusiastic explorers and somebody who primarily came to enjoy the company without losing a beloved companion.

For now, Witchspire makes the strongest case to players happy to inhabit a world still changing around them. Treat the coven as a growing project, not a completed institution.
