The big picture
Total War: WARHAMMER III lets you plan a campaign carefully, develop settlements and consider diplomacy, then asks what happens when the army opposite contains something much bigger than the sensible formation you brought. Its appeal is joining turn-based strategy to real-time battles. Where you commit forces matters, and the confrontation becomes more interesting because you know what its outcome threatens. Losing a fight is unpleasant; losing the fight you started while leaving somewhere important undefended adds a more personal flavor. Official manual
Creative Assembly developed the SEGA-published Windows game, released February 17, 2022. Feral's macOS and Linux editions followed May 5 and June 16. This is a substantial strategy hobby, not just a collection of spectacular armies waiting for you to press the exciting button. The decisions connecting the battles need to sound enjoyable too.
Reasons to look closer
Immortal Empires combines the trilogy's world into a sprawling sandbox, with playable content determined by what you own. Faction identities give that scale character, from Kislev and Grand Cathay to the forces of Chaos. Campaigns support up to eight players, and The Lost God prologue provides a guided introduction before the larger map starts making suggestions about how much of your evening it could use. Steam overview, New-player guide
The central attraction is decisions feeding other decisions. Settlement development supports recruitment; expansion creates borders; diplomacy changes which threats need military answers. You can win a spectacular battle and still discover that sending the army there was the strategic equivalent of leaving the front door open because the neighbors looked interesting.
Can you win, and should you be here?
The campaign gives battles consequences beyond the results screen. Protecting territory you've developed means more than winning a disconnected encounter, while committing forces elsewhere raises questions about what remains exposed. An impressive army isn't useful in every place simultaneously, however warmly you feel about its capabilities.
That connection rewards thinking past the immediate clash. Another conquest may supply opportunity and create too much to defend. A diplomatic solution can make a military problem more manageable. Planning is part of the pleasure, not merely a complicated way to select the next fight. If buildings and future moves sound like the dull interruptions between monsters, the enormous scale may become a burden. Campaign and battle structure
The appetite required is substantial. A sprawling campaign creates room for long plans, changing priorities and consequences that take time to emerge. That is rewarding when you enjoy watching decisions develop. It is less convenient if you were hoping to solve the whole strategic situation before somebody announces dinner.
Pick the army you want to understand
Grand Cathay has transforming dragon rulers, Kislev its Ice Queen, and the Daemon Prince offers adjustable body parts and powers. These identities give a player something more concrete to choose than a different color on the map. The Daemon Prince is particularly literal about revising a character build: apparently the best response to uncertainty can involve reconsidering the limbs. Faction features
Start with an identity that makes you curious rather than researching the theoretically perfect campaign indefinitely. SEGA recommends The Lost God for newcomers, and you don't need an extensive Warhammer reading assignment before beginning. The attraction is learning what an army wants from you. Trying to master everybody before selecting anyone is an excellent way to spend the entire evening never actually commanding a unit.
The shopping list is not the campaign objective
Lords of the End Times launched September 24, 2026. Buying any individual pack grants Immortal Empires access without owning a base game, with Feral confirming the route for macOS and Linux too. That changes older advice about what you need to start. It does not, however, unlock every army that might look appealing on the selection screen. SEGA launch announcement, Feral availability
The current entry guide specifies the purchased lord, associated content, a core racial roster, relevant free content, the prologue and Bretonnia. Owners of either earlier base game also have an Immortal Empires route under the 2025 changes. Check what you already own and buy for the campaign you want. Collecting every possible faction before learning one isn't a strategic necessity, although the catalogue is happy to entertain the idea. Entry entitlements, Earlier-game ownership
Eight players require more than eight copies
Simultaneous campaign turns reduce waiting, and a player initiating a battle can share unit control with others. That makes the ongoing campaign more sociable than watching one friend operate an entire confrontation alone. It also allows you to discover who can be trusted with the part of the army you've become particularly attached to. Multiplayer FAQ
Regular attendance remains the harder system to arrange. Up to eight campaign participants is a feature, not a guarantee of eight compatible calendars. Agree on a manageable commitment and check operating-system and patch compatibility. Feral's October 14 notice gives macOS update 9.0.1 the changes from Windows 9.0.3, while Linux remained on 9.0 awaiting that update in the review snapshot. The Mac port is not an Apple-silicon-native binary. Port status, Mac FAQ
GeForce NOW offers supported PC-edition streaming, including qualifying Chromebooks and Android setups with keyboard and mouse. Game access, membership, internet and region requirements apply; this doesn't establish native phone versions. WARHAMMER III suits players who want the planning and spectacle together. Choose a faction, learn its priorities, and allow the rest to follow. There will be enough trouble without purchasing every possible source before the first turn. Streaming requirements
