Shift At Midnight has identified a gap in retail training: what if the customer asking for assistance is not technically a person? Bun Muen's gas-station horror game puts interrogation alongside stocking shelves and cleaning up. Check identification, compare details on the computer and watch behaviour. Let a doppelganger leave and it can return as something considerably less interested in customer service. Suddenly the mop is not the most alarming item in the workplace.

Published by Kwalee, the full game arrived on July 22, 2026, for Windows and Xbox Series X|S. Solo play is supported, so staffing this establishment badly does not require persuading anyone else to apply.

Reasons to look closer

The combination works as a design proposition because ordinary responsibilities compete with suspicion. There are shelves to fill and quotas to meet while somebody at the counter deserves a closer look. Barricades, traps and hiding provide a second stage when prevention fails. The 13-shift story uses randomized shifts rather than a single fixed sequence. That creates a useful tension between learning the job and assuming you already know everybody who walks through the door.

The benefits package has a goose

The pet system gives the job a more personal motive. You choose a cat, husky, puppy or goose, then face medicine costs within the first three shifts. Earning enough can let your companion come to work and help clean the store. That is a compelling little inversion: you are not just earning money because a counter says so, but trying to keep a creature well. Success is conditional, not guaranteed. Also, adopting a goose and then seeking a less threatening workplace is a fascinating sequence of decisions. The possibility of a helpful animal gives the shop an emotional centre without making the surrounding danger disappear.

Regulars, irregulars and power tools

The September update added 30 customers to Story and Endless, plus a purchasable chainsaw. Endless also gained computer-viewable security cameras watching for trouble emerging from the forest. Those additions address different needs: more people to scrutinize, more information about approaching danger, and one fairly emphatic answer to an unsatisfactory inspection. A chainsaw is not a substitute for careful detective work, but it certainly changes the tone of the employee handbook.

Endless remains labelled beta. Customer patience was re-enabled in September, so older advice describing a patience-free version is out of date. Extra starting traps and planks also changed its opening conditions. These are meaningful adjustments to the pressure of an ongoing shift, not proof that the larger planned Endless expansion is finished. Treat the present mode as the offer, not every future creature somebody might eventually send through the door.

August's changes tackled a different kind of uncertainty. Product prices were equalized to make the true-ending route less dependent on random stock, while Steam Cloud saves and individual player-volume sliders were added. The pricing change is especially relevant in a game where earnings carry consequences: a frightening decision is more interesting when it belongs to you rather than the wholesale catalogue. Separate voice levels are welcome in principle, too. One coworker's emergency announcement should not have to arrive at the volume of an actual forecourt explosion. Better control over whose voice you hear is especially valuable when the important information is somebody else's observation.

Six employees are not necessarily better

Steam received an optional six-player lobby setting on July 23, but the developer still describes three as the intended design and discourages larger groups for a first playthrough. That warning is worth respecting. Doubling the staff can mean more assistance; it can also mean a disciplinary committee materializing beside every suspicious purchase. Think of the larger option as permission to experiment, not evidence of equivalent balance. Start with the intended team size if you want the clearest introduction, then decide whether the store genuinely needs three extra people explaining what everyone else did wrong.

Xbox currently lists online co-op for two to three. Confirmed crossplay links Xbox with PC Game Pass, not Steam, so buying on different PC storefronts is not automatically harmless. Settle that detail before arranging the night shift.

A job worth dreading

The free 2025 demos are separate from this release. September's multiplayer demo contained three fixed nights; the full game's randomized structure is the important difference, not simply the addition of a price tag. Familiarity with that preview is not a complete training certificate.

The strongest reason to apply is that small, personal stake: keeping a companion well makes an appalling job mean something. That is a good reason to care about the takings beyond simply completing another quota. The goose has not offered to cover your shift, naturally.
