The big picture
Rook follows a signal from an old friend across an Earth trapped in winter beneath a shattered moon. As an engineer, he has useful skills for restoring shelters and repairing machinery. Unfortunately, the apocalypse has provided far more things needing repair than one engineer would reasonably put on a weekend list. Permafrost turns that imbalance into a survival game about making another journey possible, then surviving the journey you became confident enough to attempt.
SpaceRocket Games' sandbox, published by Toplitz Productions, entered development Early Access on October 9, 2026, for Windows. It is available through Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store. The opening narrative, side quests, crafting, building and cooperative play are present, but the complete story and planned additions are not a finished package. That distinction matters before you decide the frozen wasteland sounds like somewhere to settle down. Early Access launch
Reasons to look closer
A network of shelters makes safety something you extend across the map. Restoring a useful stop, repairing a machine or reclaiming technology can improve the next expedition. The point of building is therefore partly what it lets you reach, rather than simply how impressive the house looks from outside. A modest shelter in the right place can be more valuable than a spectacular home located a long way behind your rapidly worsening decision.
That structure gives small improvements a purpose. You can make a route less risky, establish somewhere to recover or work out that you have enough supplies to return. Survival games need satisfying achievements below the level of fixing the entire planet. Improving a journey is a manageable ambition for a person who has already been given the larger inconvenience of the moon breaking.
Players who like planning have a clear reason to investigate. If your ideal exploration means following every interesting shape on the horizon without preparation, the same systems may feel restrictive. Permafrost wants curiosity to have a packing list.
A full bag is not proof of a successful trip
Inventory is limited, and particularly dangerous cold zones offer valuable loot. Hunting, crafting clothing and equipment, dynamic weather, hostile wildlife and rival factions all affect an expedition. The interesting decision is how much to pursue before turning back. A bag stuffed with excellent finds does lose some of its persuasive power if its owner has failed to remain alive.
Weather matters because avoiding enemies does not automatically make a route sensible. You can decline every fight and still have made a thoroughly bad plan. That allows a journey to develop tension without a constant procession of attacks: supplies and conditions can force a change of mind before anything with teeth becomes involved.
Preparation is most appealing when it buys lasting freedom. If repairing a shelter makes later trips easier, the work has changed the world in a useful way. If you mainly enjoy roaming, repeated checks may still feel like the game asking you to put your shoes on again every time you reach the front door. Be honest about whether the routine itself sounds rewarding.
The companion has several practical qualifications
Your dog can scout, warn of danger and carry supplies. Those jobs make it part of the expedition, with a role beyond looking sympathetic while the humans make another questionable choice. There is something particularly sensible about travelling with an animal whose contribution includes noticing danger before you finish deciding whether that distant building looks interesting. Dog, shelter and co-op overview
You can also play alone or cooperate online with up to four people. Solo play leaves the pace and responsibility in your hands. A group can share tasks, but it also introduces the possibility that everyone's idea of being ready involves someone else having packed the necessary things. The dog may be the only member whose job description remains clear throughout the trip.
Co-op suits friends who enjoy agreeing on an expedition and building towards shared goals. It will be less harmonious if one person wants to construct a shelter, another wants to hunt and a third has already disappeared towards a landmark. Discuss the evening's purpose before discovering that your survival group consists of several unrelated holidays.
The unfinished part is important
The earlier planned 2025 window and August 21, 2026 date were superseded by the actual October 9 Early Access launch. There is no confirmed 1.0 release date. The developers anticipate at least twelve months in Early Access, while further biomes, quests, equipment and vehicles remain development plans. A planned vehicle is of limited assistance when deciding how to get home today. Current Early Access FAQ
Story-focused players may prefer to wait for a completed journey. Players chiefly interested in building, scavenging and improving an expedition may find the current structure more relevant than the unfinished narrative. Neither preference needs defending; it simply changes whether buying now makes sense.
Permafrost's strongest invitation is the connection between a dangerous outing and the preparations that make another outing possible. The cold, restricted carrying space and shelter network give those preparations a reason to matter. Choose it if that rhythm appeals, and judge the present game rather than the roadmap. Before leaving, check the supplies yourself. The dog already has enough responsibilities.
