The big picture
Magin: The Rat Project Stories connects magic to desire and fear, which makes being emotionally complicated a matter of practical capability. Elester is an experienced underworld killer. Tolen is only beginning to discover his abilities. Putting their linked lives into a branching adventure with card combat gives their state of mind a role beyond determining which expression appears beside the next line of dialogue.
The Rat Project developed the game and Daedalic Entertainment published it. The full release arrived on April 29, 2026, for Windows, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch; earlier playable builds were demos, not commercial Early Access. Current Xbox availability is Series X|S, so do not rely on an older listing that also mentioned Xbox One. The setting is already complicated enough without accidentally choosing hardware that cannot take you there. Official game overview
Reasons to look closer
Narrative decisions influence the cards you acquire, while emotions affect exploration and combat. Double-sided essence cards make character state part of the tactical system. That creates a reason to care about a choice beyond whether it produces an immediately convenient reply. A decision can alter both your understanding of a person and the options they bring to a fight.
For role-playing fans, that connection is attractive. You are developing a character and a deck together. It also provides a mild problem for dedicated optimisers: the mechanically tempting reward might belong to a choice that does not fit the person you imagined playing. Apparently even a well-arranged hand can come with a few awkward questions about how it was acquired.
The appeal is strongest when you enjoy both sides. Someone interested mainly in rapid tactical runs may find the conversation an interruption. Someone interested mainly in the characters may want gentler combat. Magin asks those interests to share an adventure, rather than assuming they become identical as soon as a card has a dramatic illustration.
Industrial progress has discovered feelings
The world approaches an industrial revolution driven by essence, a force connected to emotions. Machinery therefore brings questions about power and control into a magical setting. An unusual ability can matter to more than the person who possesses it, which gives the story useful pressures beyond deciding which spell makes the largest explosion.
Elester and Tolen approach that world from different positions. An established killer brings obligations and history; a young person discovering power has more room for uncertainty. Their linked fates, difficult choices and multiple endings form the narrative, presented with comic-book sequences and full voice-over. Publisher's story and presentation outline
There is plenty of dark-fantasy density in that combination. Personal troubles, dangerous magic and social upheaval all want a turn. If you enjoy a world with several layers to unpack, that is part of the attraction. If you mainly want a brisk route to the next battle, the characters may seem to have arrived carrying considerably more background than the evening can comfortably accommodate.
The next card may require paying attention
Exploration involves examining environments, interacting with objects and meeting people who can become allies or enemies. You are participating in an adventure rather than selecting fights from a purely tactical menu. That gives the spaces and relationships an opportunity to mean something before the next mechanical reward arrives.
Cards can come from defeated enemies and story choices, and the deck can be upgraded as you progress. The connection makes a card more than an anonymous rectangle pulled from a chest. It may represent something you chose or encountered, which gives the growing set of options a history. Ideally, that makes you interested in how the deck came together as well as what it can do now.
The practical demand is attention. Returning to the game means remembering people and earlier choices, not just the rules of the current hand. It is less convenient for someone who wants every session to be an entirely self-contained problem. If you intend to play while following three unrelated conversations elsewhere, the fictional people may reasonably struggle to remain memorable.
A complicated mood still needs a clear description
When emotions affect both narrative and tactics, clear rules matter. You need to understand when a choice is expressing personality and when it changes a condition relevant to combat. Mystery can give a world character, but it is less useful when you are simply trying to discover why the card did something different from what you expected.
The September 23 Steam Update 1.3 corrected card descriptions and effects, rebalanced enemies and added a lower-challenge story mode. Those are released PC changes; identical console patch timing is not established. Check your version rather than assuming a Steam announcement means every console received the same update on the same day. Update 1.3 history
Story mode gives character-focused players another route through the material. Wanting to follow a difficult fictional life does not automatically mean wanting every battle to become a difficult real evening. Providing a lower-challenge option respects that difference without removing the deck-building for those who came specifically to engage with it.
Magin makes most sense if you want to think about why a character chooses something and what that choice adds to future play. Its emotional systems, cards and adventure structure belong to the same premise. Pure deck-building devotees may prefer a more concentrated tactical game. For narrative-minded players, the intriguing part is that the conversation can change the hand. Listen carefully before deciding which feelings you want to take into the next fight.
