HELLMART has identified a gap in the supermarket-simulator market: insufficient dread about the person approaching the entrance. You work in a round-the-clock convenience store in the Far North, where ordinary retail duties share a schedule with something much worse. The customer-service slogan needs a footnote. The customer may be right, but that does not necessarily mean you should open the door.

GAZE IN GAMES released this single-player Windows horror game on January 28, 2026, with publishing credited to the studio and Storymode. Its original story asks you to survive seven days. June's Extended Shift update supplies a longer store-management alternative, because apparently finishing a week in this establishment can leave a person thinking, yes, more of that.

Reasons to look closer

Retail provides an unusually useful foundation for horror. A shopkeeper has reasons to watch people, keep track of small changes and remain inside a place that a sensible outsider would abandon immediately. Customers are supposed to arrive. Doors are supposed to open. HELLMART can therefore make an entirely ordinary part of the job feel like a security failure waiting for permission.

The daily sales quota adds a second, wonderfully irritating source of pressure. Surviving the night is important, but the employer would also appreciate some movement in the revenue column. The premise works because the mundane demand does not disappear when the supernatural one arrives. A monster can threaten your existence while an empty shelf threatens your performance review. Both somehow require your attention before the end of the shift.

Clean up, stock up, lock up

Daytime work covers the register, cleaning and replenishing stock. Evening preparation turns toward the generator, cameras, supplies and barricades. That change in duties gives the same building two identities. The entrance is a route for business during one part of the cycle and a terrible architectural oversight during another. Every convenience store has a front door; only this one makes that sound like an accusation.

The appealing design question is how those routines support each other. Familiarity with a workplace can become a survival tool, since knowing where everything belongs also makes disruption easier to notice. Horror does not always need a larger map. Sometimes it needs to make the small place you already understand feel newly unsafe. The aisle you have repeatedly stocked is a more personal problem than a spooky corridor somebody built solely for the occasion.

Please have your humanity ready for inspection

Night visitors put judgment at the center of the danger. Something malicious can try to deceive you, and deciding whom to admit affects more than your own immediate safety. The story has three endings, with customers' fates influenced by your choices. It is an awkward promotion from sales assistant to emergency gatekeeper, with no apparent increase in staffing.

That gives suspicion a cost. Simply treating everyone outside as disposable would flatten the whole idea into a lock-management exercise. The more interesting tension comes from needing to distinguish a person in trouble from trouble wearing a person-shaped excuse. Customer service normally discourages making assumptions about strangers. HELLMART has arranged circumstances in which that training material may actively work against you.

Congratulations, you qualify for overtime

Extended Shift unlocks after reaching any story ending. It adds two difficulty settings, longer progression and purchasing stock across multiple in-game days. That changes the reason to return: the story supplies a defined ordeal, while the additional mode gives the shop's ongoing operation more room. Stock planning is a convincing way to extend this particular game. The building remains a business, however unreasonable its evening clientele becomes.

The June update also introduces stamina, so running and swinging an axe are no longer bottomless resources. You can contribute your own money toward a missed sales quota, which may be the most chilling employment policy in the entire package. New upgrades include carrying several boxes at once. There is something magnificently bleak about surviving a supernatural encounter and discovering that the day's practical reward is a more efficient way to do your job.

A workplace with atmosphere and invoices

Ghost Memory's soundtrack separates calmer daytime material from more tense nighttime music. That division fits the game's central trick: the workplace is recognizably the same, but its emotional meaning changes after dark. The contrast matters more than making every moment equally ominous. If the shop is permanently operating at maximum panic, there is less room for the uncomfortable realization that a normal shift has stopped being normal.

HELLMART is most inviting if the chores are part of the attraction rather than something you want to skip on the way to a scare. Its identity depends on stocking, watching, preparing and making decisions at the door, with the later mode leaning further into management. The horror has a specific address and a sales target. You are welcome to complain to the manager, but the manager appears to be mainly concerned about whether the till balances.
