The big picture
Helldivers 2 gives you powerful support weapons and permanent friendly fire, then asks you to cooperate. This is a fine arrangement until someone decides the place you are standing would be greatly improved by an airstrike. Arrowhead's third-person shooter turns teamwork into a practical question: can four people use spectacular equipment without making each other its most reliable target?
Super Earth's cheerful propaganda insists all of this serves Managed Democracy, which provides a wonderfully pompous explanation for a squad's less dignified moments. Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Publishing, the game launched on PS5 and PC on 8 February 2024, followed by Xbox Series X|S on 26 August 2025, with Nixxes credited on that edition. You can play online alone or with up to three others, but the design makes a particularly strong argument for friends who can forgive an apology beginning, “I thought you'd moved.”
Reasons to look closer
Cooperative loadouts, summoned stratagems and a shared Galactic War make preparation and communication part of the action. Crossplay connects PC, PlayStation and Xbox squads. Warbonds remain available rather than expiring on a timer, leaving more room to pursue equipment at your own pace. The crucial qualification is that enjoying powerful explosions and enjoying your friends' powerful explosions are sometimes separate achievements.
The support weapon needs someone to support it
Stratagems are summoned with short button combinations, bringing heavier weapons, defensive equipment, supplies and air support. Some weapons allow teammate-assisted reloading. A loadout therefore works best when the squad considers how its tools fit together, rather than independently selecting four things that look impressive and discovering nobody planned for anything else.
Small contributions matter: covering someone, supplying them or keeping a weapon firing can be as useful as delivering the spectacular attack. This creates room for players who like helping without needing the biggest moment on screen. Friendly fire makes those jobs more consequential, because your equipment remains dangerous to your team. The person quietly watching the angles may be the only reason an ambitious demonstration of firepower doesn't become a very short squad meeting.
Your group determines whether the accident is funny
Mistakes fit the game's absurd military confidence, but tolerance has limits. An accidental disaster can be a shared joke with relaxed friends; repeated careless deaths can become a practical seminar in why people prefer single-player games. Communication and spatial awareness matter, and an apology isn't a substitute for occasionally looking where the other three players are.
The Galactic War connects deployments to a larger conflict. Arrowhead's anniversary retrospective describes community events such as Malevelon Creek and changes to enemies and equipment. That context can make missions feel part of a shared story. It can't make repeated objectives endlessly fresh for everyone, however. If you want a tightly paced campaign with a final curtain, ongoing deployments ask for a different commitment. Choose this because coordinating messy operations already sounds entertaining, not because the propaganda promises the next one will be especially glorious.
The enemy has added more things to worry about
August 2026's Devoid of Liberty update expanded the Illuminate conflict with mutated threats, new objectives and possible secondary extraction zones. The Void deep dive described operations containing several randomized primary objectives. Changing routes and priorities gives the squad more to coordinate, which is useful when everyone has become slightly too comfortable with the previous way of doing things.
Scope of Authority, a long-range-focused Premium Warbond, is announced for 20 October 2026. It is not available to play yet. A promising rifle in an announcement hasn't yet earned credit for improving a match. There's enough actual equipment to judge without promoting future arrivals to honorary veterans.
A catalogue without a deadline is still a catalogue
Warbonds contain equipment and cosmetics, with individual items unlocked using earned Medals. Super Credits open paid catalogues and can be bought or found through gameplay. Existing Warbonds remain available, removing the need to race an expiry clock. Paying for access doesn't instantly unlock every item, and the contents include weapons and armour alongside cosmetic extras.
The sensible approach is to inspect what interests you and leave the rest alone. Trying to collect everything can turn a cooperative shooter into an equipment-acquisition project interrupted by combat. The absence of a deadline is a useful invitation to take your time, rather than an instruction to expand the collection until browsing it becomes your main contribution to the war.
Pick a home for your progression
Crossplay doesn't include cross-save, cross-progression or cross-buy. Moving platforms means a separate progression record, and support cannot transfer your unlocks. An internet connection is required, with paid online-play subscriptions on consoles. Steam Deck is rated Playable with small interface text flagged, not a separate native Linux release.
Optional PS5 and Portal cloud routes require the appropriate Premium access and regional eligibility. Xbox cloud requires owning the Xbox game plus an eligible Game Pass plan, compatible controls and a supported connection and region; mobile devices, Xbox One and headset routes are streaming, with Quest showing a flat screen. Sort those practicalities before assembling the squad. Helldivers 2's best idea is that power creates responsibility as well as spectacle. Bring people who can communicate and recover from embarrassment, and try to keep the air support geographically separate from your emotional support.
