The big picture

FINAL FANTASY XIV offers you the role of Warrior of Light, then leaves fishing, crafting, card games and chocobo racing within reach. Naturally, saving the world may have to wait. There are fish here, and you've already travelled all this way. Square Enix's MMORPG has enough activities to let a perfectly respectable fantasy hero become the person who logs in specifically to fuss about clothes.

A Realm Reborn launched on 27 August 2013, and the adventure has accumulated a substantial history since. For newcomers in October 2026, the important changes are an expanded free trial and a native Switch 2 edition. Old buying advice can now be wrong in several expensive ways, so a little reading before committing is advisable. There will be plenty more reading once you're in.

Reasons to look closer

A long-running fantasy story, distinct cooperative combat jobs and quieter side pursuits give XIV several ways to keep you interested. Eligible story duties can be played with NPC companions, taking some pressure off learning in public. The trial now stretches through Shadowbringers with no playtime limit, which is a very generous opportunity to discover whether this particular world is about to eat your evenings.

You don't have to catch up by Tuesday

The trial includes A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers, up to level 80. That's enough adventure to make “just trying it” sound suspiciously like the beginning of a long relationship. Locations, characters and conflicts have room to become familiar, which suits players who enjoy settling into a setting rather than sprinting through it with a shopping list.

The commitment needs to appeal on its own terms. Treating years of story as an inconvenient hallway leading to the latest patch is a miserable way to approach a hallway this long. Enjoy the chapter you're in. If the actual journey feels like something to endure, the promise of reaching even more journey isn't much of a rescue plan. You aren't late to somebody else's adventure, and the people at the far end have probably found another fish to worry about anyway.

Pick the responsibility you actually want

Combat jobs divide into tanks, healers and damage dealers, with melee, physical ranged and magical ranged variations. Tanks manage enemy attention, healers protect and restore the party, and damage jobs have their own action and positioning demands. That makes cooperation more interesting than several people independently trying to be the main character, although the Warrior of Light title is certainly doing its best to encourage them.

Choose a role whose basic task sounds enjoyable. The fashionable recommendation is little comfort if you discover that keeping strangers alive makes you resent every stranger. Duty Support helps here: NPC companions can join supported story duties across A Realm Reborn through Dawntrail, providing space to absorb the setting and learn without feeling hurried. “Supported” matters. XIV remains an online MMO, and this doesn't turn every activity into an offline solo option. It does mean you don't need to organize a small social event every time you want to enter an eligible dungeon.

Your optional hobby has acquired a calendar

Fishing, crafting, Triple Triad and chocobo racing give an evening somewhere else to go when another fight sounds tiring. That breadth is appealing because you can choose your own emphasis. It becomes less appealing if you decide every available distraction is now your personal responsibility. A card collection should be a pleasant detour, rather than evidence that your heroic duties have developed an administrative department.

September's patch 7.56 added beastmaster, a limited job built around creature companions and its Crucible of the Unbroken activity. Its queue restrictions mean it cannot be treated like an ordinary job everywhere. Evercold is announced for January 2027, so its promised changes remain future plans. There's enough available already without making your enjoyment depend on the next thing arriving.

Free means free, with some very specific fences

The trial caps money at 300,000 gil and excludes the market board, trading and Free Company membership. You can use Duty Finder or join an invited party, but cannot create parties yourself. Buying the game ends trial eligibility. Those details are especially important if your plan involves starting with friends: discovering that nobody can assemble your party is an unnecessarily accurate simulation of arranging dinner.

The trial therefore gives a huge sample of the RPG with a restricted view of its social and economic life. Paid play needs the appropriate licence and a subscription after included free time. Windows, Mac, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 have native versions. Steam and non-Steam Windows licences are distinct; current Windows requirements specify Windows 11 64-bit, and the separate Mac product requires supported Apple Silicon M1-or-later hardware and macOS versions. Check before purchasing a second platform licence. Your existing enthusiasm doesn't function as a receipt.

Portable adventures, less portable subscriptions

PlayStation Plus isn't required for installed PlayStation play. Paid Xbox play additionally needs Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, though the free trial doesn't. Switch 2 launched on 4 August 2026 and has a separate XIV subscription, with a discount for qualifying subscribers elsewhere; Nintendo Switch Online isn't required, and linked Nintendo and Square Enix account regions must match.

Steam Deck is rated Playable, with launcher, controls and settings caveats; the trial may need the on-screen keyboard. That isn't general Linux certification. Optional PS5 and Portal cloud play brings Premium, eligible game access, subscription, region and connection requirements, with an adult account needed for Portal. Once those practicalities are sorted, XIV makes a strong case for players who want a world to return to. Just leave yourself permission to ignore some of it. Even a Warrior of Light deserves a night without extracurricular obligations.
