The big picture

Jesse Faden enters the Federal Bureau of Control looking for her missing brother and ends up its Director during an otherworldly invasion. Most employers at least schedule an interview before handing over that much unresolved trouble. Remedy's supernatural action game puts the crisis inside the Oldest House, a headquarters with considerably more going on than its exterior suggests. The organisation has departments, procedures and impossible events, although the procedures don't appear to have discouraged the events.

Originally released on August 27, 2019, Control makes curiosity about one strange institution central to its appeal. The setting gives the mystery a coherent home: the people trying to classify the inexplicable have also become surrounded by it. If the thought of supernatural danger acquiring an official department fascinates you, there is a strong invitation here. If you want every oddity explained promptly, this may be the wrong building to ask for a straightforward answer.

Reasons to look closer

A transforming Service Weapon and telekinetic abilities give the action a distinctive premise, while the Oldest House makes exploration feel like investigating one interconnected organisation. Assist Mode lets several combat pressures be adjusted independently. That combination makes Control worth considering if you want to discover a peculiar place and occasionally express yourself by turning part of that place into an attack.

Combat and boss encounters remain substantial. The Bureau's mysteries don't turn this into a quiet investigative stroll, however intriguing the institutional setting sounds. The violence and uncanny imagery can be uncomfortable, too. Players chiefly interested in the atmosphere should consider those elements and the action emphasis, along with the assistance options, before committing. Becoming Director has apparently failed to secure Jesse a desk job.

The room is more than somewhere to keep the enemies

Official descriptions emphasise reactive environments, telekinesis and the Service Weapon's changing forms. The surrounding space can become part of the arsenal, giving combat a more specific identity than simply firing an unusual gun. An office full of objects offers possibilities, though probably not the possibilities the person responsible for furnishing it had in mind.

That suits players who enjoy ability-driven action and finding ways for tools to work together. The appeal is partly expressive: the room contributes to what you can do, and the supernatural abilities connect the action to the premise. You aren't merely passing through strange architecture while ordinary shooting happens in front of it.

It also makes the buying question practical. Do you want to learn these combat tools, or do you mainly want to investigate the setting? Both interests can coexist, but the game gives action a significant share of the time. The existence of a fascinating workplace mystery does not mean its employees will stop trying to make your day worse while you consider it.

Follow the odd thing rather than completing the building

The Oldest House contains shifting, open-ended spaces and secrets. Concentrating exploration on one institution gives discoveries a shared context: another unfamiliar area still belongs to the same organisation you're trying to understand. That can make curiosity feel cumulative, as though each new piece adds to an increasingly worrying picture of where the budget went.

Familiar office imagery gives the impossible something ordinary to disturb. A strange object stands out differently when the surroundings already resemble a place where somebody would ask you to submit a form. The useful instinct is to follow an interesting question, rather than reducing the building immediately to a list of spaces you have successfully emptied of content.

If searching and assembling a picture from partial information feels like homework, that structure may lose much of its appeal. Control asks for some tolerance of incomplete explanations. The mystery is part of the attraction, not merely a temporary inconvenience before an efficient summary arrives.

Difficulty doesn't have to be one large switch

Assist Mode includes separate options affecting energy recovery, weapon reload behaviour, incoming damage, damage dealt, survival in combat and aiming assistance. That lets players target particular sources of friction rather than deciding that every system must remain at its default setting or disappear together.

Remedy states that using assistance doesn't disable achievements or trophies. Those settings exist to be used, not admired from a distance while you struggle with a part you don't enjoy. The Bureau has enough unexplained restrictions without inventing another one for yourself.

These options aren't a guarantee of complete accessibility for every person or device. Specific input, vision, hearing or motion requirements still need checking. They do give prospective players something concrete to investigate, which is more useful than a blanket verdict that the game is simply easy or difficult.

Ultimate Edition includes more building to worry about

Ultimate Edition bundles the base game with The Foundation and AWE. The Foundation explores caverns underneath the Oldest House and expands Jesse's abilities; AWE opens the Investigations Sector and connects to Alan Wake. They extend the institution's setting rather than introducing unrelated extras solely to make the box look busier. Apparently the original building had not yet exhausted its capacity for alarming discoveries.

Existing owners should check exact entitlements. The native PS5 and Xbox Series upgrade belongs to Ultimate Edition's arrangement; owning the original game plus expansions doesn't automatically grant it. Playing an older console edition through backward compatibility is another route. Buying everything once is an understandable ambition, but the storefront still needs to confirm what “everything” means for your account.

Choose an entrance your device actually supports

Native releases cover Windows, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and qualifying Apple devices. The iPhone/iPad edition arrived April 22, 2026 with touch-specific adaptations; Mac support requires compatible Apple silicon. Check the current App Store chip and operating-system requirements instead of trusting the logo on the device.

Switch is specifically a Cloud Version requiring a suitable ongoing internet connection, not an installed native port. That distinction matters if you expect offline play. Control's strongest fit is someone who wants supernatural action and a place worth investigating, with assistance available to shape the combat. Bring curiosity and a tolerance for uncertainty. The Director's title comes with responsibilities, but seemingly very little help from facilities management.
