The big picture

Bringing a dog to the end of the world improves the proposition considerably. Bringing a dog who contributes to the fighting improves it further, although it does raise uncomfortable questions about who is carrying the partnership. Beast of Reincarnation puts Emma and Koo in a blighted future Japan and gives them different jobs: she deals with immediate danger, while he supplies abilities you choose through a command menu. Finally, a travelling companion whose response to trouble is more useful than standing in the doorway.

Game Freak's action RPG uses that partnership to join quick reactions with tactical pauses. The setting is melancholy, the monsters are unwelcoming and Emma's hair has developed capabilities well beyond a reliable ponytail. What matters most is whether you like combat that asks you to switch between timing an action and deciding what should happen next. Koo is appealing, but affection alone cannot parry an attack.

Reasons to look closer

Emma's successful parries build the resource for Koo's abilities, and opening his command menu slows the fight. Xbox's launch guide describes that exchange: good defence creates a chance to think, then the companion turns that thinking into action. It gives the dog a genuine tactical role instead of treating him as a furry reminder that the protagonist has feelings.

That two-speed rhythm is the main reason to investigate. Players who enjoy reading enemy attacks but also appreciate a moment to consider their options have something specific to work with. The reverse is just as important. Slowing time through commands does not make this a mostly turn-based adventure, and dedicated sword-swingers may dislike having their flow interrupted. The hybrid is the attraction. If you only want one half, the other will keep appearing like a dog with a tennis ball during a serious conversation.

A difficult year for garden maintenance

Japan in 4026 has a blight problem, and Emma's plant-like hair helps her cross obstacles and attack from above. Her affliction gives her power while keeping her apart from other people. The same ruined world that makes her an outsider supplies tools for moving through it. Most people have a bad hair day; Emma's hair has become a means of transport.

Koo belongs to the creatures she would normally hunt, which gives their cooperation an uneasy foundation beyond the obvious appeal of having company. The partnership is worth caring about because it changes both the story's assumptions and your decisions during combat. It is more interesting than simply bringing an adorable animal along to soften the promotional screenshots.

Exploration also supports equipment, skill trees and Spirit Stones. Discoveries can feed the next fight, so investigating a route has a practical incentive beyond admiring how thoroughly civilisation has gone wrong. Build-minded players get choices between encounters. Anyone who prefers a fixed toolkit should expect some time considering equipment instead of assuming that every pause will involve wistfully looking at ruins with the dog.

Pick a difficulty that likes you back

Story Mode relaxes parry timing and reduces enemy damage; Normal and Hard offer other starting points. That makes Story Mode a sensible option for someone interested in Emma and Koo who does not want their evening assessed by a hostile timing window. Choosing a gentler setting does not make the dog respect you less. He has no published difficulty-tier opinions.

The October 1 PC update adds Very Hard, one-hit-death Ruthless mode and extra New Game+ difficulty choices. Ruthless is admirably clear about the relationship it wants with you. These options give repeat players more ways to tune the pressure, but the hardest setting is for people who actually enjoy that pressure. Selecting it because it sounds prestigious is an efficient way to turn a companion adventure into a loading-screen acquaintance.

Shortcuts come with consequences

The October 9 progression update lets players bypass three later zones after reaching a particular mid-game milestone. It also adds field-of-view adjustment and further cutscene-pacing changes. Skipping the zones can prevent their associated achievements on that run, although a later New Game+ route offers another opportunity. The shorter journey therefore involves a real decision. It is worth reading the sign before taking the suspiciously convenient path around three later zones.

Game Freak and Fictions also identify the next patch, provisionally planned for October 19, as the end of this phase of frequent major updates. Serious remaining concerns may still receive attention later. As of October 18, that patch has not arrived. Decide whether the current game appeals rather than adopting an imaginary future overhaul and hoping the developers share your plans for it.

Which version gets the dog?

The full release launched worldwide on August 4, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows. Steam shows August 3, while console listings use August 4. This is a completed commercial release rather than an Early Access project. Xbox supports Play Anywhere and cloud access; check the entitlement when moving between console and PC instead of assuming every purchase follows you everywhere with Koo's devotion.

Standard is the straightforward edition. Deluxe adds equipment, resources and cosmetic extras, which need to justify their own price rather than borrowing all the goodwill from the central partnership. Beast of Reincarnation makes its strongest case to players who want parry-driven action, deliberate commands and character development between fights. Be more cautious if defensive timing already annoys you or if you're waiting for extensive future reconstruction. The dog's contribution is substantial, but he cannot make you enjoy a combat system you fundamentally don't want to play.
