The big picture
James Bond usually enters a room as though he has already read the ending, chosen the wine and arranged for someone else to explain the damage. First Light gives him less experience. IO Interactive's younger recruit is still learning how to turn confidence into competence, preferably before anyone notices the gap. That makes learning a spy game's tools feel unusually appropriate: the person holding the controller and the man in the excellent jacket are both figuring this out.
This is an original Bond origin story, with sneaking, bluffing, gadgets and violence sharing the same itinerary. It also wants chases and spectacle. Anyone expecting to spend six hours studying one guard's cigarette break should know that the story occasionally has another country to reach. The pleasure lies in having several possible responses to trouble, including the traditional Bond response of making considerably more trouble.
Reasons to look closer
Observation has practical value here. Information gathering helps you choose an approach; infiltration and deception can delay the moment everyone starts shooting; gadgets and environmental interactions give you something more imaginative to try than repeatedly introducing your forehead to the same obstacle. IOI's gameplay diary explains how that toolkit fits together. A quiet plan going wrong can become an invitation to improvise, which is fortunate for anyone whose definition of stealth includes optimistic crouching.
The wider attraction is variety within one single-player adventure. You can enjoy thinking through a space without committing to a game entirely about immaculate planning. Conversely, liking Bond does not automatically mean liking a directed action campaign. The game needs you to enjoy the journey as well as the small decisions along it. There is only so much freedom a cinematic chase can offer before somebody has to ask why the hero is still inspecting a cupboard.
Confidence is not a complete plan
Bluffing suits this version of Bond especially well. It puts nerve beside observation and physical ability, allowing the fantasy to include talking your way toward a solution instead of merely finding a quieter weapon. Close-range attacks and gunplay remain part of the mix. You are choosing how to handle a situation, not applying for membership of a particularly strict stealth club.
The limits matter, though. Focused narrative sequences alternate with more open objective areas. A varied toolkit does not make every mission an endlessly rearrangeable playground, and players who love the prolonged investigation of one security system may resent being hurried toward the next dramatic event. Bond's friction with the stricter Greenway echoes that tension: improvisation looks much more charming when you aren't responsible for the person improvising. Somewhere between those two attitudes is the intended rhythm.
The tuxedo gets another outing
The free October 1 Extended Operations update adds New Game+, Photo Mode, 00 difficulty and more Tactical Simulation missions. Finishing the campaign lets you replay with earned outfits and gadgets. The Valhalla Protocol brings driving challenges in Slovakia, and another operation returns to Vietnam. Having survived the story once, you can now revisit it with more equipment and fewer excuses.
Those additions give repetition a useful focus. Returning players can try a different approach, practise individual skills or take photographs at a moment when nobody is asking sensible questions about national security. The extra missions also offer a smaller commitment than replaying the whole narrative. That distinction matters when you want another dose of spy nonsense without enrolling in the entire adventure again.
The 00 setting makes enemies more alert and combat less forgiving. Choose it if refining your execution sounds enjoyable. There is no moral obligation to make Bond's life harder just because the option has an impressive name. He already has enough people trying to kill him; your difficulty menu does not need to contribute out of politeness.
Check which departure you're booking
The general release was May 27, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows through Steam and Epic. Digital advance access began May 26, the date Steam displays. That one-day head start was access to the completed release, not a prolonged development-stage Early Access programme. PS5 Pro support belongs to the PS5 version, so the extra letters do not require buying a separate Bond.
Switch 2 remains a future destination. IOI's October 14 announcement moves that release to March 18, 2027, superseding older 2026 plans. As of October 18, Switch 2 owners still need patience. It is one gadget the publisher cannot bundle into an edition.
Buy the mission before the wardrobe
Standard, Deluxe, Collector's and Legacy packages were offered at launch. Deluxe extras include outfits and weapon or gadget skins. Standard is the straightforward choice for the adventure; alternate looks and physical collectibles need to justify themselves separately. Looking more expensive while causing an international incident is a preference, not a prerequisite.
Install the current build before starting. The 1.3.0 notes address crashes, progression and presentation alongside the new content. Those fixes are useful without promising trouble-free play on every PC, and elaborate lighting still deserves a look at the hardware requirements. First Light suits players who want a guided Bond story with room for invention. Come expecting that balance, rather than unlimited freedom, and the invitation is clear: make a plan, keep a gadget handy and try to look as though the resulting explosion was intentional.
